This furry hero saved his neighbour under dire circumstances. Young Madison Hazen was playing in her yard when a rabid fox attacked her. Fortunately, Ricky Howard, 13, and his dog, Domino, came to her aide.
Madison told WPXI: “I was down there, and the fox was coming around. It got my pant leg, and I had to run,”
Ricky sprung into action, while Domino came at the fox and grabbed him.
“(The fox) came around again, and it bit the dog three times before it got me,” Madison said.
Madison went to find her parents once they had stopped the fox, who were shocked and grateful for their neighbour’s quick thinking.
Jared Hazen, Madison’s father, said: “We’re thankful for a neighbor like Ricky and a dog like Domino… She probably wouldn’t still be here. She could have got[ten] mauled. We’re thankful, real thankful.”
The health department later found that the fox had rabies. Both Ricky and Madison had to take a series of injections, and hero Domino had to go under quarantine – with the risk that he may have to be euthanised.
“He’s always been a good dog, always been protective and loves kids. He just did what he would always do,” said Domino’s owner, Ricky.
Domino did not have his vaccinations against rabies for some years, but so far has showed no signs of being infected.
