Sapphyre Johnson, a happy, healthy toddler, was born without fingers and feet. She now has a new best friend, in the form of Lt. Dan – a stunning white German Shepherd, born without a front right paw.
Sapphyre’s mother, Ashley Johnson, told ABC News: “It was two weeks ago when we were told that [Karen Riddle, a breeder] contacted [Shriner’s Hospital for Children] about a puppy who was missing one front paw. She wanted him to grow up with a child who had similar circumstances.”
When she first saw a photograph of Lt. Dan – the pup named after a character from the classic film “Forrest Gump,” Sapphyre immediately said: “He has a foot like mine.”
Shriner’s Hospital and the breeder, Karen Riddle, worked together in order to train and ready Lt. Dan for a career as a therapy dog. Together, the transported him to his new home, earlier this week on Monday, April 20th. The dates marks the beginning of a special friendship between Lt. Dan and Sapphyre.
