A lot of dogs will develop a fear of loud environmental noises. Here are a few tips to help ease your dog when experiencing noise phobias.
. Fight the Instinct to pet and sooth
This may come as a surprise to many but your natural instinct when your dog is scared is not the right thing to do. If you pet you dogs they will begin to think that is the correct reaction, because, you are acting as if the fear was indeed real and justified.
. Get your dog accustomed to loud noises with your Mp3 player.
Regularly playing downloads of everyday noises in the background will get your dog used to loud sounds. If your dog is scared of something in particular record that sound and play it quietly at first while distracting your dog and slowly increase the volume. Eventually your dog will not be scared of the sounds if you keep it up with repetition and positive rewards and treats.
. Create a safe and comfortable environment
Make sure your dog has a nice place in your home that’s just for him, like a shelter or a dog house. Make sure it’s comfortable and nice so he has a place to go to escape from the fear, this will make him a lot less panic stricken when scared.
Also don’t forget the white noise factor. Get your dog used to noise by turning on some music or the television. It helps!
