Most dogs love little kids and have instincts to protect them. However if their is a little civil war brewing in your home, here are a few tips to help bring about a peace treaty.
Make sure your dog knows who is boss.
The first thing you need to do is to make sure your dog is properly trained. If your dog can’t obey simple commands such as “sit” you are not only going to have a problem you are also going to struggle to take control in certain situations. So if your dog gets anxious around your kids and barks non-stop, he won’t stop just because you tell him. So get ahead of it! Make sure your bet knows who is leader of the pack.
The nursery is for your baby and your baby only, your dog needs to know and respect this. Teaching your dog that this space is off bounds as soon as possible is the only way to avoid jealousy and future problems.
Practice makes perfect.
Rinse and repeat! Practice really does make perfect. Find a balance between looking after your kid and your pet. Find out what works for you and practice new techniques if something stops working. Be patient and always reward good behavior! This will create a positive energy and you will see your dog become maternal towards your children and any conflict that may have arisen, will cease.
