A new bill signed into law in Chicago, Illinois will allow for a canine therapy assistant to be present in the courtroom. The aim of this innovative bill is to have the dog be a source of comfort to victims of traumatic crimes, such as child abuse, or crimes with excessive levels of violence.
The belief is people will feel more at ease, comfortable and protected when testifying on the witness stand against horrible crimes. Being in court in any capacity causes stress but the stress levels are much higher when you are a victim in one form or another.
Victims that felt more at ease with proceedings will have a better chancel to stand up for themselves. This seems to be a growing trend in many places. For example funeral homes have therapy dogs which seems to be very successful, so other states might just follow suit.
