This is quite a bittersweet story, on the one hand it highlights the loyalty that runs deep in all dogs and is further proof (if proof were needed) that dog’s really are a mans best friend. On the other hand it also highlights the problems with homelessness and the sad weight that comes with the loss of life.
This is the story of a homeless man in Santiago, Chile, who passed away over a cold night, and because of his situation no one bit his dog mourned his death.
The man who was found dead in the La Vega neighborhood had suffered from alcoholism and was known in the neighborhood for doing odd jobs . When authorities arrived to collect the body, the dead man’s dog was sitting next to him with wide expectant eyes, as if he refused to believe it.
Stray dogs are very common in Chile, and while some communities tend to look after street dogs and rescue organizations are always on the street to help, an unfairly large number of abandoned dogs in the country are left to fend for themselves.
Magaly Cortes Vera who lives in the neighborhood says this lonely dog is “…not the only stray in the neighborhood. Even though he might not have an owner now, he is surrounded by loving individuals who care for him and feed him on a daily basis.”
Which is good news for the dog, we can only hope that without his best friend he can still lead a full and happy life.
